I should know better...

::sigh:: Yes, I should know better, but I got into an argument with an extreme right-winger over in the comment section of someone's Facebook page about the Matthew Shepard Act.

It's just that the disdain positively dripped off of this woman's comments. And every comment of her's was a piece of misinformation lifted straight out of a list of Fox News / Glenn Beck talking points. How Judy Shepard manages to encounter this garbage all the time after losing her son and stay sane & rational is beyond me.

I swear, it's like trying to argue with a Holocaust denier...

I tell myself that it's worth doing because there are usually so many others reading. It's worth it to counter the misinformation (and outright lies!) that those jerks throw out.

But it's going to shorten my lifespan. Sigh.

You've probably heard them, but the basic idea was:

- There were drugs and/or booze involved (so he was a bad person and deserved what he got)

- He made a pass at one or more of the men who ended up killing him (the "gay panic" thing - no red-blooded man puts up with that, so he deserved what he got)

- These things were stated as if they were facts that "everyone knows" (so you were there ? and if not, then why aren't you using your amazing psychic powers to pick stocks or lotto numbers ?)

- This law is the final step before the "Thought Police" show up in your church, etc...(Bullsh*t. READ the law, it's about actions, not words - there are specific provisions in the law about this)

- I believe in equal justice, no special treatment for minorities (notice how it's always straight, white, social "conservatives" who fall back on this simplistic stuff ? Never anyone who's actually been victimized by hate ?)

Well, that's nice of you. I feel kinda bad - like I started a shouting match in your living room or something :}

(not that some people don't deserve a good dressing down...)
